Keeping Pace with Technology

Ron's natural mechanical abilities facilitated his extensive technical training. In 1982, he received seven ASE certificates. He has been an ASE Master Technician and Master Truck Technician since 1987, has 17 current certificates and is double-master-certified. The shop's six full-time technicians have all earned their master certification. Managing six technicians, a full-time service manager, parts manager, office manager and a parts driver/assistant is an important part of his job.

While learning the automotive-repair trade came easily for Ron, mastering business management proved to be a bigger challenge. "I can't emphasize the importance of management training enough." Ron said. "I've had some excellent technicians leave to start their own shops. I try to be supportive and realistic, explaining that there's a lot more to running a successful shop than just being a good technician."

Hands-On Technician

Throughout his career, Ron has remained a hands-on technician, consistently monitoring new technology and equipping his technicians with the latest tools and equipment. The shop's investment in advanced training and diagnostic equipment has paid off, earning Ron Catt Automotive a solid reputation for being a leader in technology. "We get the jobs other shops are afraid to do or have to turn down," Ron said.

Automobile manufacturers are producing more and more models and offering additional options. As a repair facility, it's extremely challenging to maintain the technical information we need to perform our jobs well. We use the NAPATECH Tele-Diagnostic Hotline a couple of times every week to diagnose tough repair problems sooner and serve our customers more efficiently.

Mission as Technician of the Year

One of Ron's goals as the NAPA/ASE Technician of the Year is to continue upgrading the public image of the automotive-repair industry. "Unfortunately, our industry's image has been bruised by the incompetence and dishonesty of a few unprofessional shops. I feel a strong personal responsibility to dispel that image by educating my customers about their vehicles and our shop's services," Ron said. He appears on "Traffic Watch," a local TV program to help communicate the importance of preventive vehicle maintenance.

"We really strive to be a cut above other repair shops," Ron said. "Customers appreciate anything we can do to help. Most people today don't have a lot of spare time to deal with vehicle maintenance. The little extras we offer -- shuttle services, detailing and arranging car rentals -- make a big difference in our customers' busy lives."
